The standout feature is its incredible read speed of up to 7,300MB/s, which matches the internal storage requirements of the console. This means you can play PS5 games directly from the drive without needing to copy them to the internal storage first. This drive is ideal for serious gamers who want the best possible experience and do not mind the initial setup process. If you are looking for a reliable, high-speed expansion that feels like part of the console itself, this is the top recommendation for your PS5 storage needs.

Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best External PS5 Storage Options
Selecting the right external storage for your PS5 involves considering several critical factors that affect performance, capacity, and overall user experience.
Storage Capacity
The amount of storage you need depends on how many games you own and how large they are. Modern titles can take up over 100GB each, so having at least 1TB or more is recommended for serious gamers.
Choose a drive with enough space to hold your library without frequent deletion and re-downloading.
Drive Type
Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) are cheaper and offer more capacity but are slower. Solid State Drives (SSDs) are faster but typically more expensive. While neither external USB drive can run PS5 games directly, SSDs transfer data to internal storage much faster.
Pick an SSD if you value speed and an HDD if you prioritize large storage space on a budget.
Interface and Connectivity
Most external drives use USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 for connectivity. These provide sufficient speed for storage purposes. Some newer drives use USB-C, which is more future-proof and works with a wider range of devices.
Ensure your drive has the right port to match your console or PC connections.
Official Licensing
Officially licensed drives come with firmware tested to work seamlessly with your console. This reduces compatibility issues and ensures the drive is recognized correctly by the PS5 system.
Always look for drives that are certified to work with PlayStation systems.
Portability
If you plan to take your games to friends' houses or on trips, choose a portable drive. Smaller, lightweight drives are easier to carry but may have less capacity than desktop models.
Consider the form factor based on whether you need to transport the drive regularly.
Durability and Protection
External drives can suffer from accidental drops or exposure to elements. Look for features like rugged casing, water resistance, or drop protection to extend the lifespan of your hardware.
Prioritize durability if you often travel or use the drive in less controlled environments.
Warranty
A good warranty indicates the manufacturer stands behind their product. Many external drives offer 1 to 5 years of coverage. Check the terms to understand what is covered if the drive fails.
Opt for a drive with a longer warranty to protect your investment.
Budget
Prices vary significantly based on capacity, speed, and features. Determine your budget early to narrow down your choices. Remember that higher capacity often means lower cost per gigabyte.
Balance your spending between capacity needs and performance requirements.
How to Use and Care for Your External PS5 Storage Options
To use your external drive, connect it to a USB port on your PS5 console. The system should recognize it automatically. You can then move PS5 games to the drive for storage or run PS4 games directly from it.
Always safely eject the drive from the console before unplugging it to prevent data corruption. Go to the settings menu to turn off the drive or disconnect it properly before removing the cable.
Keep the drive in a cool, dry place and avoid dropping it. If using an HDD, be mindful that it is sensitive to movement while active. Cleaning the drive gently with a soft cloth will keep it looking good and functioning well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play PS5 games directly from an external USB drive?
No, you cannot play PS5 games directly from an external USB drive. You must copy them to the internal SSD to play. However, you can store them on the external drive and move them back to the console when needed.
Do external drives affect load times?
External USB drives generally have slower load times than internal SSDs. They are suitable for storage but not for running games that require high-speed data access. Transferring games from external storage takes longer than internal operations.
Can I store PS4 games on an external drive?
Yes, you can play PS4 games directly from an external drive. This is a great way to save space on your internal storage while still having quick access to your older titles without re-downloading them.
What is the minimum capacity I should look for?
A minimum of 1TB is recommended for most gamers since games are increasingly large. If you have a large library, consider 2TB or more to avoid running out of space frequently.
Can I use a drive on multiple consoles?
Yes, many external drives work with multiple consoles like Xbox and PC. However, the drive will need to be formatted for each console system, which will erase existing data, so back up your files first.
Is it worth upgrading to an SSD over an HDD?
Upgrading to an SSD is worth it if you value faster transfer speeds when moving games to internal storage. HDDs are better if you need massive capacity at a lower cost. Choose based on your priority.
Can I store my saved game data on an external drive?
For PS5, saved game data is stored internally or on the cloud via PlayStation Plus. External drives are primarily for game installations. PS4 saves can be copied to external drives for backup.
How do I format a drive for PS5?
Connect the drive to your PS5 and follow the on-screen prompts to format it. This process will erase all data on the drive, so ensure you back up any important files before proceeding.
Final Thoughts on Choosing the Best External PS5 Storage Options
Choosing the right external storage depends on your specific needs for capacity, speed, and budget. Our top picks highlight excellent options for every type of gamer from high-speed SSDs to massive HDD storage solutions.
Prioritize official compatibility and sufficient space to ensure your gaming experience remains seamless. Consider how often you need to move games between drives versus storing them for later use.
Remember that prices fluctuate so always check current deals before buying. The right storage solution will expand your gaming library and keep your console running smoothly for years to come.
